How teachers used to teach by candlelight

Youngsters’ today object to the statement that “passion is a thing of the old” but sadly it is very true. The passion that once existed in the past for things such as education, career and life seems to have died in this age. Today man has become so lazy. It is almost like the computers do all the thinking for us. We have no mind of our own.

Passion for anything is long gone. This digital age is becoming more and more laid back and taking life all too easy. The fire to work hard or to achieve something seems a bit odd today. Gone are the days when kids were willing to study in spite of complications such as no electricity or enough money for classes. Today our kids are so used to being pampered that they do not know what the difficult side of life is. They have no clue about the days of the past and how teachers used to teach by the candlelight (Leuchter und Kerzen von Fink). They have no idea that education was not for everyone, the lucky ones got to study. The others had to work and got to study only in their off time.

Besides the attitudes of students changing, the attitudes of the teachers too have changed. Teaching no longer remains a job that people look upon with honor. The teachers themselves don’t feel honored or proud to be a teacher. Today careers with anything technology related seem to be the best career. Teachers have lost their passion and really treat teaching like a job. No longer do they look out for the interest of their students. It is rare to find such quality in a teacher today. There is no doubt that there are many teachers who teach not just for educational purposes but the larger crowd does it as a job. They do not know what teachers did in the past. They have no clue how respected this profession was just a few years ago. They have no idea of what is expected of them. It is hard to compare them with the teachers of old, they ought to be seated down and told about the teachers of old and how teachers used to teach by the candlelight.

The passion for teaching needs to be revived today. We need teachers and students that share a passion. If we keep at it the way we are now, the education system will go down the drain. We need to make the younger generation understand how important learning and teaching is. Teachers need to be respected like our teachers of old. Children need to be taught the importance of respecting education and all those involved in it. Our children need to be sit down and told about the days of the past, how teachers used to teach by the candlelight (Silberpflege), how we didn’t have enough light to study, how we worked and studied at the same time. Our kids need to know what difficulties we faced and yet how we studied and were passionate about becoming something. Our kids need to rekindle a liking for education. They need to find passion within themselves to do something. They need to learn to aim high and think big. So let us the wiser ones, show them the way to a better future. Make your kids passionate about what they do.
